George Alexandrov was born in on 11th of September, 1969 in
Moscow from a Russian mother and a Bulgarian father. He’s keen on drawing since early childhood and discovers the oil technique at the age of 18; visual expression of ideas is closely connected with him to writing short stories and philosophy. As for this artist the inner spiritual world is the only Truth one should consider and the outer forms are just abstractions which could be moulded and changed by art, will and religious faith, then the physical gender is an abstraction too, and it does not match in some individuals with the psychological one. Since 1986 Alexandrov uses a male identity in social contacts, in spite of being born in a female body – a trustful openness which was almost dangerous in socialistic . From the very start his views on gender identity develop as totally independent of the searches of the Western thought in this direction; this facet here is something deeply idiosyncratic, springing from his artistic creed - humanist, idealist and Romantic, so inseparable and synthetically wrought into his mystic world with its own laws and the characters inhabiting it, that it is drowned into the whole and could pass unrecognized by the traditional gender researchers. The proof of this idiosyncrasy is that he discovers his identity when as a pupil he falls in love with a Soviet woman-partisan from a book on the World War II; then and later under the influence of Carlos Castaneda, his muse – the heroic personality, the “superhuman” – was formed: a character he recklessly portrays, detecting features of it in most everyday people and situations. His ideas, even those on gender, are perfectly in tune with the esoteric and Christian religion of Peter Dunov, his favourites Leo Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky with their stress on self-sacrifice and humility, with the Renaissance with the rediscovery of human dignity and confidence. And at the same time, as George paints from sheer intuition, leaving words aside, he searches for the finished, mighty form for itself – trying to find a crazy synthesis between the chastened and the abundant. The pictures are a point of intersection of all this with the adoration of the beloved women in personal life, so when fairy-tale personages are painted – like alchemists, pirates, mediators between Platonic upper spheres and earth, disguised as Indians, postmen, truck-drivers, crooks, sometimes trapped into a martyr’s fate - they all sound autobiographically.
Alexandrov thinks that intimations on the cosmic and Universal, which would appeal to a widest auditory, starts to speak in a faintly detectable voice only when one reaches the depths of the introvert and individualistic. He thinks that great art should elevate the on-looker above reality and speak of a moral and aesthetic ideal and furtively teach; it should amaze the audience with the view of personages of unbending will and aristocratic refinement, of soaring detachment from the mishaps that hard earthly conditions – from poverty and solitude to persecution - can put on them. Throughout the years Alexandrov remains deaf and indifferent to the pessimistic moods all around – which see the postmodern human crushed by the capitalistic machine, as somebody who has lost the key to God’s secrets and his faith that the aim of life to unveil, or better, merge in union with these secrets. Alexandrov is left perplexed by the current view of a man, allegedly overburdened by “knowledge” and experience, by past achievements in art, creatively sterile. On the contrary, he thinks that humans are at the dawn of their development and almost nothing has been said yet. More especially, of the angelic origin and nature of people – a closed book and a virgin area still. In the face of danger that the consumer’s world could impair the child within people and to further humiliate innocence, Alexandrov introduces his hero. Most contradictory, mutually exclusive truths melt into one monolithic kernel, a center toward which by a momentum force all the chaotic, fractured aspirations and concepts of other people rush.
At first sight the leading character of George Alexandrov’s portraits appears as a walking contradiction. A strong-willed stoic with a fixed gaze of a monk, not a nun – yet vulnerable, wearing in this gaze the suffering of all people and their helplessness. Mobile, dancing, generously scattering positive energy like a Russian – and dusk-like, “winterly”, frost-bound by shyness like a Bulgarian. Creatures with the gaze of workers and toil-worn villagers, yet spiritual aristocrats and dandies. As if sent to the bowels of the earth to do some dirty hard work with a secret mission. For all their naked sincerity they remain mysterious and unattainable. ( for Alexandrov everything so-called “feminine” is actually the child in us: the most noble, tender and valuable part in a human has been wearing until now the stigma of being “feminine”. The secondary Innocence of wisdom which has been born in the furnaces of suffering. But it is a Child, not a woman. In George’s pictures it is rather a man/child. ). Half-mythical cast of features, yet drawn from concrete people with maniacal search of likeness.
While standing on the crossroad between writing and painting ( behind the portrait or scene there is a story or echoes, dim sensations, atmospheres from his prose ), Alexandrov agrees that philosophy is a synonym of style and 95% of the painter’s energy is devoted to the search of stylistic means. Just one of them is that for 10 years he strives to reconcile expressionism and Renaissance: his bodies look heavy and thick behind their attire of solid cloth like with Gauguin and Cezanne, at the same time they are spectral, transparent, dissolving in the air like with Leonardo. The soft femininity of the bodies is protected, as behind shields of iron, by confusingly severe and ascetic glance; this softness is stunned and arrested, it makes itself invisible behind the incessant flood of movement and Michelangelian flight.
As impetuousness oh human movement is dulled down into still matter, at the sharp and rough intersections with matter, it wins and takes command, piercing through the objects and substances, though heavier now at the wings with the clay of variables stuck on them, and retaining the movement.
After living as a recluse for 18 years George Alexandrov exhibited for the first time some of his works in 2005, the entire number of them being more than 100. It would be a huge relief for the painter to share what has been stored with an intelligent and responsive audience, because there are mountains still for him to say.
